Clarity: I- translucent with unhealed fissures common to this material (Type III). PLEASE; If unsure of what clarity means see chart below for a more detailed explanation also remember colored gems are graded with the naked eye and not a loupe. Size: 6.8 x 5.4 x 3.3 mm. Hardness: 8.0 on MOHS. Painite is named after Mr. Pain, a British gem collector who discovered the first two pieces of the mineral in Mogok in 1954. Between 1954 and 2004, less than two dozen additional pieces of this mineral were found. Some ended up in private collections, while others were acquired by notable museums and institutions including the Gemological Institute of America and the Smithsonian. Painite was called by some the rarest gem mineral on earth. In June 2005, Painite crystals were discovered at the Wetloo Mine on Hinthar Hill near Mogok, and shortly thereafter at nearby Thu-Rein-Thaung (Sun Mountain). While the new discoveries represent a significant increase in the number of Painite crystals and crystal fragments available, the amount of facetable material is still very limited. Painite is usually opaque, and almost always highly fractured - faceted gems of Painite without fractures and showing some color remain elusive. Painite has a chemical formula of CaZrBAl9O18. The refractive index is 1.79 - 1.82, and the Moh's hardness is 8- 8.5. Protect Your Feedback & Ours. Due to unfair feedback we have been forced to review and rethink our feedback policy for buyers.
